De Amerikaanse zeemacht stuit op de bodem van de Stille Oceaan op een mysterieus ruimteschip dat meer dan 300 jaar geleden is neergestort. Psycholoog Norman Goodman, de wiskundige Harry Adams, biochemicus Beth Halperin en astrofysicus Ted Fielding, die deel uitmaken van een gouvernementele missie, krijgen de opdracht de vreemde structuur van het wrak te bestuderen.
