Wanneer de vriend van haar moeder een ongezonde interesse in haar begint te vertonen wordt Jasira, een dertienjarig Amerikaans-Arabisch meisje, door haar moeder naar Texas gestuurd om bij haar Libanese vader te gaan wonen. Haar strenge vader is echter niet in staat zijn puberdochter de aandacht en liefde te geven die ze nodig heeft, noch kan hij omgaan met Jasira's tegenstrijdige gevoelens over haar snel veranderende lichaam. Amerika staat op het punt Koeweit binnen te vallen, en Jasira raakt op school steeds meer geïsoleerd als haar klasgenoten haar beginnen uit te schelden voor 'Theedoek!'. Haar eenzaamheid en haar groeiende frustratie over de tegenstrijdige regels van haar ouders drijven haar tot rebels gedrag. Daarnaast worstelt ze met haar ontluikende seksualiteit.
