De Afro-Amerikaan Elwood Curtis groeit op in de jaren 60 en wordt valselijk beschuldigd van het plegen van een misdaad en wordt hierop naar een jeugdinstelling gestuurd. Zijn enige toeverlaat op deze helse plek vindt hij in Turner met wie hij vriendschap sluit. Samen pogen ze het hoofd te bieden aan de gruwelen van de school die gerund wordt door een corrupt bestuur.
