De achttienjarige Kendra begint aan een opleiding aan een HBCU in Noord-Carolina. Ze stroomt in dankzij een studiebeurs en is vastbesloten om zich te focussen op haar school. Kendra valt voor Ben, een klasgenoot. Ze krijgt echter te maken met haar ouders die de relatie niet goedkeuren, financiële problemen en een onverwachte zwangerschap.
