Gebaseerd op de memoires van Jane Stern. Jane Stern (Kathy Bates) is een schrijfster die geplaagd wordt door fobieën en zich overal vreselijk druk om maakt. Ze besluit zich aan te melden voor de vrijwillige ambulance dienst, waar ze zich helemaal op stort. Vrij kort daarna beseft ze dat anderen helpen het beste medicijn tegen je eigen problemen is.
