Het verhaal van de popgroep The Monkees uit de jaren 60, terwijl ze boven hun status als band, gecreëerd voor een tv-show, uitstijgen om op eigen kracht hun nalatenschap te vestigen. De band wordt met veel obstakels geconfronteerd, waaronder het recht om hun eigen instrumenten op plaat te bespelen.
