Brad en Caroline Sexton, een rijk stel uit New York, houden al jaren de schijn hoog en doen alsof ze gelukkig getrouwd zijn. Uiteindelijk besluiten ze na jaren van ruzie, schreeuwen en aparte slaapkamers toch uit elkaar te gaan. Maar op zekere dag wordt Brad aangehouden wegens belastingontduiking. In werkelijkheid is het zijn corrupte boekhouder die met de rekeningen geknoeid heeft. Het paar gaat samen op de vlucht en vindt onderdak bij de Amish, een zeer conservatieve gemeenschap.
