Kan een boom racistisch zijn? Over het antwoord op die vraag werd een aantal jaren geleden tot op Fox News gedebatteerd. Inzet van de discussie was een rij tamarisken langs een enorm golfterrein in Palm Springs, die de wijk Crossley Tract aan het zicht onttrok. Ooit was dit een overwegend zwarte wijk, genoemd naar oprichter Lawrence Crossley, die zich bijna een eeuw geleden als een van de eerste zwarte inwoners vestigde in het toen hagelwitte toeristenparadijs. Volgens de inwoners van Crossley Tract waren de bomen instrumenteel in een beleid van segregatie.
