Roy McAvoy, alias 'Tin Cup', geeft golflessen op een godvergeten terrein in Salome, Texas waar bijna niemand meer komt. Ten einde raad aanvaardt hij om als doodgewone caddy te werken voor zijn eeuwige aartsvijand, kampioen David Simms. Tot overmaat van ramp wordt hij ook nog verliefd op diens vriendin, psychologe Molly Griswold. Zij komt golfles volgen bij Roy en hij weet zeker dat hij geen kans maakt om haar hart te winnen. Misschien als hij de US Open kan winnen, het zwaarste golftoernooi dat er bestaat...
