John Ingram en zijn jongere vrouw Rae vertrekken met hun jacht op reis om in alle rust de dood van hun zoontje te verwerken. In het midden van de oceaan komt er plots een jonge man in een roeibootje op hen afgevaren, die beweert de enige overlevende te zijn van een acuut geval van voedselvergiftiging aan boord van een ander schip. Wanneer John het schip in kwestie gaat bekijken, wordt het hem al snel duidelijk dat de lijken aan boord van de gehavende Orpheus op een heel andere manier aan hun einde gekomen zijn. Een verontrustende ontdekking, zeker wanneer hij beseft dat hij gevangen zit op het zinkende schip en bovendien z'n eigen jacht ziet wegvaren met de vreemdeling aan het roer...
