Hij kende een redelijk onbezorgde jeugd en een succesvolle periode in het bedrijfsleven maar verloor zichzelf daarna in de drank. De ontmoeting met zijn vrouw en bekering tot het geloof gaven hem de houvast zijn problemen te overwinnen en zich te ontpoppen tot belangrijkste leider van het Westen.
