Om aan de laatste wensen van zijn vader, een oorlogsveteraan, tegemoet te komen, reist Mickey Gordon naar Normandië om hem daar te begraven. Mickey is een professioneel basketbalscheidsrechter en een fervent vrijgezel. Bij het uitstappen op de luchthaven verneemt hij dat de kist verloren is. De speurtocht neemt een hele tijd in beslag. Ellen, een mooie Amerikaanse, verantwoordelijk voor de public relations van de luchthaven, heeft medelijden met Mickey. Ze stelt hem voor een rit door Parijs te maken en ze worden halsoverkop verliefd. Tussen Montmartre en de Seine beleven ze een knotsgekke idylle. Wanneer zijn problemen zijn opgelost, vertrekt Mickey naar Santa Monica. Ellen reist hem kort nadien achterna en ze treden in het huwelijk. Dan beginnen de problemen.
