Hamlet, Prins van Denemarken, keert terug naar zijn vaderland wanneer zijn vader, de koning, sterft. Zijn moeder Gertrude is al hertrouwd met zijn oom Claudius, de nieuwe koning. Ze dringen bij Hamlet aan om hem te laten trouwen met zijn geliefde Ophelia.
