Ergens in een uithoek van Centraal-Azië, waar de nasleep van de oorlog in Afganistan nog voelbaar is, woont de zeventienjarige Mamlakat. Zij droomt van een carrière als filmster en hangt altijd rond bij theaters. Op een nacht wordt ze verleid door iemand die beweert acteur en zelfs een vriend van Tom Cruise te zijn. Ze raakt van hem in verwachting, maar de 'acteur' is plotseling verdwenen. Na een mislukte abortus moet ze aan haar vader opbiechten dat ze zwanger is geweest. Deze besluit dat de eer van de familie gered moet worden.
