Wat als je gedurende drie jaar geïsoleerd zou zijn van het leven op aarde? Dat is een van de uitdagingen waar de NASA zich momenteel over buigt, nu een bemande missie naar Mars wordt voorbereid. De astronauten zullen tijdens die trip een extreem isolement ervaren. Kan virtual reality dat isolement doorbreken? Of een intelligente robot om tegen te praten? NASA-psycholoog Al Holland onderzoekt hoe de astronauten best kunnen omgaan met sociaal isolement.
