Het verhaal vande enige drie personen die ooit konden ontsnappen uit de beroemde, meest gevreesde gevangenis Alcatraz. De op een rots gebouwde vesting dient als eindstation voor de allerzwaarste criminelen. Gedreven door sterke drang naar vrijheid en vernederd door de keiharde straffen van de gemene bewaking, begint de streng bewaakte Frank Morris met nog een paar lotgenoten aan wat nog niemand eerder lukte: vluchten uit Alcatraz.
