Als de moeder van Jeff bij een ongeluk om het leven komt besluiten hij en zijn vader, die dierenarts is, te verhuizen naar haar geboorteplaats, Ludlow. Hun nieuwe huis staat dichtbij de beruchte dierenbegraafplaats. Op school wordt Jeff gepest en zijn enige vriend is Drew Gilbert. Als de hond van Drew door diens stiefvader roekeloos wordt gedood, voeren de jongens een ritueel uit op de begraafplaats. Dit is de start van een serie gruwelijke gebeurtenissen, want zonder het te weten hebben de jongens de poort van de hel geopend.
