De Amerikaan Leonard Fife vluchtte op jonge leeftijd naar Canada om de dienstplicht in Vietnam te ontlopen. Ouder, en inmiddels bekend als een beroemde documentairemaker, vecht Fife tijdens zijn laatste jaren in Montreal tegen kanker. Hij besluit in te stemmen voor een laatste interview. Fife's schokkende bekentenis ontvouwt zich in de aanwezigheid van zijn vrouw Emma, zijn toegewijde oud-student Malcolm MacLeod en een team van filmmakers die dit ingrijpende moment vastleggen.
