Lucy Honeychurch is een jonge vrouw uit de gegoede negentiende-eeuwse burgerij. Samen met haar chaperonne Miss Bartlett reist ze naar Firenze in Italië. In het hotel blijkt dat hun kamer niet het uitzicht heeft dat ze hadden verwacht. Uiteindelijk staan ene meneer Emerson en zijn zoon George hun kamer af aan de dames. Enkele dagen later kust George Lucy, zonder hiervoor toestemming te vragen! Terug in Engeland verlooft de jongedame zich met Cecil, een verwaande kwast. George en zijn vader komen niet veel later naar Engeland en huren een optrekje in Lucy's buurt. Zodra George hoort dat ze verloofd is met Cecil, probeert hij haar te overtuigen voor hem en de ware liefde te kiezen.
