Leo, een rustige Japanse jongen, wordt tijdens zijn vakantie op Hawaï gedumpt door zijn vriendin omdat ze hem te saai vindt. Hij besluit school te laten voor wat het is en vestigt zich op het eiland. Hij vindt werk in een bioscoop in het stadje Honokaa waar alleen maar oude mensen wonen, maar hij geniet van het rustige en eenvoudige leven. Als hij een pakje moet bezorgen bij een eenzame weduwe, besluit die voor hem iedere dag uitgebreid te koken en er ontstaat een bijzondere relatie tussen hun twee.
