Detective Joe Gavilan en zijn jonge collega K.C. Calden onderzoeken de moord op een beloftevolle rapgroep in een nachtclub in Hollywood. Alle sporen wijzen in de richting van de beruchte platenbaas Antoine Sartain. Er doen immers geruchten de ronde dat die in het verleden wel vaker artiesten heeft omgebracht omdat ze onder hun contract uit wilden komen. Hun onderzoek wordt echter belemmerd door privéproblemen. Terwijl Gavilan met financiële zorgen kampt en nauwlettend in de gaten wordt gehouden door Interne Zaken, twijfelt Calden aan zijn toekomst als agent. Hij droomt immers luidop van een acteercarrière.
