De zachtaardige Francois Pignon werkt als accountant in een rubberfabriek. Hij staat op het punt ontslagen te worden. Maar dan komt zijn buurman op een lumineus idee. Francois zou het gerucht moeten gaan verspreiden dat hij homoseksueel is. De directie zal zich dan wel drie keer bedenken voordat ze hem ontslaan. Een proces wegens discriminatie op grond van seksuele geaardheid is wel het laatste waarop ze zitten te wachten. Het plan slaagt, maar hij staat nu wel te boek als homo.
