David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley), cultuurcriticus op televisie en populair docent aan een New Yorkse universiteit, ontmoet Consuela Castillo (Penélope Cruz), een beschaafde studente van vierentwintig, dochter van rijke Cubaanse ballingen. De ontmoeting resulteert in complete chaos in het leven van Kepesh.
