Miles Massey, een succesvol advocaat uit Los Angeles, is gespecialiseerd in echtscheidingen. Maar ondanks zijn indrukwekkende klantenbestand, zijn groot aantal gewonnen zaken, het respect van zijn collega's en een eigen waterdicht contract, staat hij nu op een keerpunt in zijn leven. Succes kan hem niet meer boeien en de verveling slaat toe. Hij is dringend toe aan een nieuwe uitdaging. En die krijgt hij in de gedaante van Marylin Rexroth, de bijna ex-vrouw van zijn rijke klant Rex Rexroth, een gefortuneerde vastgoedontwikkelaar. Met de hulp van de gedreven privé-detective Gus Petch, is Marylin erin geslaagd om Rex vast te zetten. Ze kijkt al verlangend uit naar haar financiële onafhankelijkheid. Maar daar lijkt Miles een stokje voor te steken.
