Ben Butley is een bittere professor van middelbare leeftijd die alles en iedereen en vooral zichzelf haat. Zijn leven verandert op een dag in een grote puinhoop als tegelijkertijd zijn vrouw hem verlaat, zijn vriend waarmee hij een homoseksuele relatie heeft hem bedriegt en zijn meest gehate collega plotseling succes heeft.
