Een aspirant-romanschrijver exploiteert een kleine boekwinkel in de buurt. Zijn vrouw is een getalenteerde schilder. Hun huwelijk loopt spaak en ze staan op het punt hun scheidingspapieren te ondertekenen. Ondertussen zijn de legendarische Casanova en zijn geliefde Lavinia personages die gevangen zitten in een 17e-eeuws kinderboek. De tragedie van de aanstaande scheiding leidt tot de vrijlating van Casanova en Lavinia uit de grenzen van het kinderpop-upboek.
