Shaun Brumder (Hanks) is tevreden met zijn bestaan als slimme en getalenteerde maar ongeinteresseerde surfende luilak in Zuid-Californie - tot de dag dat hij een roman ontdekt van de gevierde schrijver Martin Skinner. Daardoor geinspireerd ontdekt hij plotseling de wens van zijn leven: het saaie Orange County achter zich te laten en bij Skinner aan de Stanford University een studie Creatief Schrijven te volgen. Nadat hij echter door een aanmeldingsfout niet wordt toegelaten, is Shaun gedwongen hulp te vragen. Niet alleen aan zijn vriendin Ashley, maar ook aan zijn hopeloos gestoorde ouders en zijn broer Lance. Met hun hulp en een reeks hilarische omstandigheden wordt zijn droom om aan de nachtmerrie van zijn woonplaats te onstnappen werkelijkheid.
