Clary Fray denkt een doodgewoon tienermeisje uit New York te zijn. Dit verandert allemaal wanneer haar moeder wordt aangevallen en ontvoerd door een demon. Wanneer ze aan een zoektocht begint om haar moeder terug te vinden, doet ze ontdekkingen over haar afkomst en haar verleden. Deze ontdekkingen zullen haar toekomst gaan bepalen.
