Redbelt speelt zich af in een wereld van portiers, kooivechters, politieagenten en leden van speciale eenheden. Mike Terry en zijn vrouw Sondra hebben samen een sportschool waar ze les geven in Jiu-Jitsu. Alhoewel hij een getalenteerde vechter is, weigert hij deel te nemen aan wedstrijden waarmee hij geld kan verdienen en zijn sportschool zou kunnen behoeden voor een faillissement. In plaats daarvan traint hij zijn studenten in zelfverdediging volgens de aloude Samoeraicode. Als hij op een dag de filmster Chet Frank (Tim Allen) redt, krijgt hij een baan aangeboden in Hollywood. Hierdoor verandert zijn leven zo drastisch dat hij toch voor de eerste keer van zijn leven in de ring moet stappen.
