Deze film is gebaseerd op de gebeurtenissen rondom één van meest beruchte waargebeurde mysteries van Hollywood. Het volgt een privé detective (Adrien Brody) in de jaren '50. Deze is bezig met een onderzoek naar de dood van de "superman" acteur Georges Reeves (Ben Affleck). Het onderzoek wordt erg persoonlijk als hij diverse onverwachte verbindingen en overeenkomsten met zijn eigen leven tegenkomt.
