Brooklyn, New York, 1952. De werknemers van de grootste fabriek in Brooklyn staken. Vanuit een situatie van verveling en ontevredenheid zoeken de stakers elkaar op, waarbij de spanningen hoog oplopen en de gebeurtenissen elkaar snel opvolgen. Zo heeft Vinnie met zijn vrienden een lucratief handeltje opgezet in het bestelen van de mannelijke klanten van een louche bar met de hulp van de prostituee Tralala. Tralala op haar beurt lijkt haar hart te hebben verloren aan een militair, terwijl Harry vanuit onvrede meer naar aantrekkelijke mannen taalt dan naar zijn vrouw. Big Joe's dochter blijkt zwanger van Tommy, waarop Joe Tommy in elkaar slaat. De situatie escaleert in een gewelddadige finale, die samenvalt met het eind van de staking. Merkwaardig genoeg gaat het leven hierna gewoon rustig verder, bijna alsof er niets is gebeurd.
