In 1774 wordt Georgiana Spencer (Knightley) – zeventien jaar jong; mooi; goed in vreemde talen, paardrijden en dansen – door haar moeder uitgehuwelijkt aan één van de machtigste mannen van Engeland (Fiennes). Hij wil dat ze voor hem een opvolger baart en is verder meer geïnteresseerd in zijn honden. Georgiana stort zich op het sociale leven van de Engelse upper-class en staat dagelijks in de roddelrubrieken van de krant.
