In 1774 wordt Georgiana Spencer (Knightley) – zeventien jaar jong; mooi; goed in vreemde talen, paardrijden en dansen – door haar moeder uitgehuwelijkt aan één van de machtigste mannen van Engeland (Fiennes). Hij wil dat ze voor hem een opvolger baart en is verder meer geïnteresseerd in zijn honden.
