De Oeigoerse immigrante Aishe zit zonder verblijfspapieren en poogt in New York een leven op te bouwen na de ontberingen die ze ervaarde in China. Terwijl ze de taal machtig wil zijn is ze werkzaam in een restaurant. Ondertussen herinnert ze zichzelf aan haar verleden waarbij haar familie vasthoudt aan de islam en Aishe door haar militaire vader werd opgeleid. Op een dag ontmoet ze de oorlogsveteraan Skinner met wie het goed klikt.
