Plot

De verlegen, kettingrokende en aan slapeloosheid lijdende Peter McGowan is een toneelregisseur uit L.A. met een flink aantal successen op zijn naam. Helaas heeft hij de afgelopen tien jaar geen succes meer gehad. Zijn schoonmoeder wordt langzaamaan seniel, één of andere vreemdeling beweert dat hij McGowan is en de buren hebben een nieuwe hond die de hele nacht blaft. Zijn vrouw wil een kind; hij niet. McGowan werkt aan een nieuw stuk als een alleenstaande moeder met haar achtjarige dochter in het huis naast hen komt wonen. Zijn vrouw nodigt het kind meteen uit voor een bezoekje.
