Duitsland 1943. De achtjarige Bruno, het zoontje van een Nazi-commandant, verhuist met zijn familie naar een plek die ver weg is, waar niets te doen is en waar niemand is om mee te spelen. Tot hij op ontdekkingstocht gaat en het nabij gelegen concentratiekamp ontdekt. Er ontstaat een verboden vriendschap tussen Bruno en de Joodse Shmuel die gevangen zit in een het kamp. De twee zijn fysiek van elkaar gescheiden door een hek van prikkeldraad, maar hun vriendschap groeit en blijft niet zonder gevolgen.
