1820. Abner Hale, een strenge en humorloze missionaris uit New England, trouwt met de prachtige Jerusha Bromley en neemt haar mee naar het exotische eiland Hawaï, waar hij de bevolking wil bekeren. De tegenstelling tussen de twee culturen blijkt echter te groot, hoewel Jerusha haar best doet de eilandbewoners te begrijpen.
