In de 19de eeuw reist de Franse zijdesmokkelaar Herve Joncour (Pitt) naar Japan om zijn smokkelwaar te verzamelen. Daar ontmoet hij een mooie Japanse vrouw bij één van zijn handelskoopmannen. Ondanks het feit dat ze niet dezelfde taal spreken wordt hij smoorverliefd op haar. Ondertussen begint zijn echte vrouw Helene (Knightley) in Frankrijk stilaan zijn geheime affaire te vermoeden.
