Balian, een jonge Franse smid, rouwt om het verlies van zijn vrouw en zijn jonge zoon. Hij krijgt bezoek van Godfrey of Ibelin - een baron van de koning van Jeruzalem, die zeer vastberaden is om vrede in het Beloofde Land te behouden. Hij is op zoek naar de rouwende Balian, zijn buitenechtelijke zoon. Balian laat zijn verdriet voor wat het is en vergezelt Godfrey op zijn heilige missie. Wanneer zijn vader voortijdig overlijdt, erft Balian grond en een eigen titel in Jeruzalem, een stad waarin Christenen, Moslims en Joden vreedzaam samengeleefd hebben gedurende de korte wapenstilstand tussen de 2e en 3e Kruistocht. In Jeruzalem wordt Balian verliefd op de mysterieuze zus van de koning, prinses Sibylla en zal Balian uitgroeien tot een van de meest eervolle en heldhaftigste ridders, die zijn volk moet beschermen tegen overweldigende krachten.
