De mooie, maar eigenwijze, prinses Anna maakt alle prinsen die om haar hand vragen belachelijk. De koning is dit gedrag zat en dwingt haar om te trouwen met een bedelaar. Het arme leven en harde werk leren de prinses een lesje, en veranderen haar in een goedaardige vrouw.
