Danny Wilson en zijn partner Mike verdienen hun brood met het zingen in aftandse kroegen en bars. Op een avond ontmoeten ze entertainer Joy Carroll die hen werk bezorgt in de nachtclub van oplichter Nick Driscoll. Maar Nick vraagt daarvoor een hoge prijs: de helft van Danny's toekomstige gage. Danny's carrière floreert vervolgens, maar zijn status is broos, evenals zijn relatie met Joy.
