Heidi is 16 en op zoek naar kortstondige seksuele ontmoetingen. Ze woont nog bij haar moeder, maar ze hunkert naar fysiek en emotioneel contact. Ze vlucht weg, weg van Canberra. Ze belandt in Jindabyne, waar ze Joe ontmoet. Joe is de zoon van een rijke boer in de omgeving. De relatie tussen de twee is complex, maar ze zijn verliefd. Heidi dwingt Joe anders te denken over maatschappelijke thema's, seksualiteit en ook biedt ze hem een ander beeld van zijn eigen toekomst. Tegen het licht van andere levens, ziet Heidi dat ze anders is. Ze ontdekt de macht der vergiffenis, ze heeft zichzelf onderschat, want ze kan meer dan ze ooit gedacht had.
