In 1910 vermoordt een staalarbeider uit Chicago per ongeluk zijn supervisor en vlucht hij met zijn vriendin en zusje naar de Texaanse panhandle om te werken met het oogsten van tarwe op de velden van een stoïcijnse boer. Een liefdesdriehoek, een zwerm sprinkhanen, een hels vuur - Malick legt het allemaal vast met dromerige authenticiteit en creëert tegelijkertijd een tijdloze Amerikaanse idylle en een ruige evocatie van de arbeid van rond de eeuwwisseling.
