De film gaat over een vrouw die een ter dood veroordeelde in de gevangenis opzoekt. Vietnamveteraan Russell (Strathairn) zit in 'death row' voor het vermoorden van een agent, als zijn ex-liefje Pam (Spacek) hem opzoekt. Pam moet iets doen met haar overtuiging dat Russell onschuldig is, en tegelijkertijd haar echtgenoot Keith (Howard) tevreden houden.
