Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt Kapitein Ericson aangesteld als bevelhebber van een Brits oologsschip dat andere schepen beschermt bij hun reis over de Atlantische Oceaan. Ericson is getraumatiseerd door de ervaring op zijn vorige schip waarbij hij veel manschappen verloor.
