1950. Hollywood is in de greep van de anticommunistische heksenjacht van McCarthy. Howard Prince is kassier in een tijdloos restaurantje en verder deeltijds bookmaker en voltijds mislukkeling. Op een dag biedt de door de communistenjagers gewraakte schrijver Alfred Miller hem 10 % van zijn gage op voorwaarde dat Prince hem zijn naam leent voor zijn nieuwste televisiescenario.
