Plot

Vanuit het achterland van Zuid-Afrika reist de zwarte predikant Stephen Kumalo (Canada Lee) af naar Johannesburg op zoek naar zijn vermiste zoon. Hij moet er constateren dat zijn volk in miserie leeft en dat zijn zoon een crimineel geworden is. Bij zijn zoektocht door de sloppenwijken wordt Kumalo geholpen door Misimangu (Sidney Poitier), een jonge Zuid-Afrikaanse dominee.
