Een meisje, achtergelaten door haar moeder toen ze drie was, verhuist met haar vader naar een klein stadje in Florida. Daar adopteert ze een weeshond die ze Winn-Dixie noemt. De band tussen het meisje en haar speciale metgezel brengt de mensen in een klein stadje in Florida samen en heelt haar eigen moeizame relatie met haar vader.
