Als Gale Sayers bij de Chicago Bears football gaat spelen, ligt hij al meteen slecht in de groep vanwege zijn donkere huidskleur. Hij wordt de kamergenoot van de fanatieke Brian Piccolo, waarna het tweetal langzaam bevriend raakt, ondanks het feit dat ze naar dezelfde positie in het team streven.
