Lilly Dillon werkt voor een bookmaker en manipuleert alszodanig uitslagen van paardenraces. Haar zoon Roy is eveneens een oplichter, die het echter wat kleinschaliger aanpakt. Wanneer Roy in het ziekenhuis terecht komt na in elkaar geslagen te zijn na een mislukte oplichtpoging, komen haar oudergevoelens boven. Inmiddels heeft Roy ook een andere vrouw in zijn leven; de aantrekkelijke Myra Langtry.
