Detective Philip Marlowe wordt ingehuurd om Velma, een voormalig danseres in een nachtclub, op te sporen. Maar vanaf het moment dat hij begint met de zaak wordt het een gevaarlijk klusje, waarbij hij steeds dieper wegzakt in een wereld van intriges.
